Happy Holidays!

Wishing you all a very wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Here's some updates from the Family Business Association:

AGM:

We held the AGM on November 17th at Robinsons Outdoor Stores. Jarrett Flaig of Lumberworld has joined the board. We’re thrilled to have him!

Dec 8th Event The Art of Negotiation:

This event was sold-out and people who attended found incredible value from speakers Dan Johnston and Janice Bell who gave us many insights into the complex world of negotiation and family dynamics. One of Dan’s highlights to encourage reluctant players around the negotiation table to open up and engage is to use the phrase, “I am curious…” This opens people up to possibility. Janice provided many insights into the emotional dynamics of family business and suggested that: “it’s never really about the money, it’s about feeling loved.” Many people in the audience were nodding their heads in agreement. It was a great event. Thanks to all who came out!

Jarrett Flaig, our newest board member from LumberWorld/Park Pacific Group of Companies, sponsored a number of tickets for the December 8th event for their key customers and it was great meeting them all. We appreciated this. He also provided a wonderful hoodie sweatshirt at the end of the event to all those who attended. Thank you.

New Website:

We’ve been working with a wonderful consultant Lara Spence who specializes in WildApricot, our amazing and secure platform for membership. She has redone the website to modernize it and make it smoothly integrated with our membership system. Check it out: www.familybusinessassociationvi.ca.

Upcoming Events

We're glad to have our members and supporters participate in events and bring in new people. We strive to offer events that will help you build your business!

Please consider buying a table of ten for $250 for our January event. This is a form of sponsorship as we are forging connections with UVic and Camosun, the respective deans of business and trades,
and this funding will go to sponsor students' attendance. Another idea is to buy a table of ten to invite colleagues, clients, partners and colleagues who are not currently members.

What the Next Generation Wants You to Know. Tuesday, January 10th 8-930am. Coast Victoria Hotel and Marina, 146 Kingston Street, Victoria BC

Too often the first generation of owners do not really understand what is on the minds and in the hearts of their children, those who work for the business and those who choose not to. This event will also be applicable for anyone trying to retain key people and what the next generation of talent really wants and needs to stay.

This will be a panel that includes:

  • Eric Findlay, 4th generation and current CEO Andrew Sheret Ltd
  • Erin Boggs, 2nd generation and current CEO Robinsons Outdoor Stores
  • Tai Orser, 2nd generation of The Root Cellar and currently working in the business.

If you’re just beginning transition or even if you have completed the transition, this session will provide lasting insights that you can put into practice. Free for Members. Non-Members $40. Purchase a table $250.
